The past year we were dismayed to see attacks on women’s reproductive rights and choices intensify in the US and worldwide. But your support continued to reassure us. Nothing will stop MSI United States (MSI US) from championing a woman’s right to make her own choices about her body, her life and her future.
The Global Gag Rule curtailed funding for contraception and made it harder for MSI to expand services to the millions of women and adolescents who still lack access. Increased stigma associated with abortion is driving more women to risk their lives to back-street services. Opponents of reproductive choice are emboldened, so our service providers in many places face greater risks as they serve their communities. But our mission remains clear. Despite this harmful policy, supporters like you made it possible for MSI to expand services in 2018.
We can continue this work because donors like you helped us close our funding gap last year. With your support, MSI’s country programs kept services running for the women and girls who depend on us. Given the huge need in sub-Saharan Africa, we even expanded into a new country, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where only 5% of married women are able to use contraception. Women’s lack of access to contraceptive choice in the DRC threatens to overwhelm plans for progress in education, health and many other critical areas. With your support, we prioritized DRC because it’s imperative that women’s access to choice is expanded and their needs are met.
Our work is more urgent than ever. In most countries where we deliver services women are disproportionately affected by poverty, yet they are the producers of food and the carriers of water to sustain their families.
But there is hope: growing evidence indicates that women’s access to reproductive health services builds resilience and helps communities thrive. Access to contraception for women who want it is key, and no distance or hurdle will keep us from bringing these services to women.
With your steadfast support we will continue to help women change their lives and realize their dreams through the freedom to make reproductive choices. Thank you for making our work possible.
Our 2018 Impact
MSI provided contraception and safe abortion care in some of the poorest and most hard-to-reach communities around the world in 2018.

US donors helped us deliver reproductive choice directly to vulnerable women and girls in 28 of the 37 countries where MSI provided family planning services in 2018.

US donors helped MSI lead the charge against virginity testing in Afghanistan. Hundreds of women and girls, some as young as 13, have been imprisoned after failing a crude and invasive virginity “test.” But in 2018, we helped secure a new policy banning such tests at every clinic and hospital in the country.
US donors supported our expansion into the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where almost 90% of women cannot access contraception and pregnancy-related deaths are among the highest in the world. Our outreach teams helped 19-year-old Sarah receive contraception for the first time. Sarah has a 14-month-old baby, and now that she has protection against an unintended pregnancy, she can resume her education and pursue a career in tailoring.
US donors supported our clinics in Mexico City, the only state in Mexico where abortion is legal by choice up to 12 weeks. Providers like Susana see clients from all over Mexico and work to remove the stigma against abortion. “Our challenge is to help women by removing the taboo,” she says.
With your support, we’re working to end unsafe abortion in five years and deliver contraception to every woman who wants it.
Access to safe abortion saves women’s lives and gives them control over their futures. For Sanu from Nepal, knowing where to go for safe, legal abortion was lifechanging:
“We heard that MS Nepal was a good, safe place for abortions. I am very relieved we came here today.”
No matter how clients access our services, they receive the highest standards in medical care. Our providers – from MS Ladies traveling door-to-door to doctors at our centers – are trained and supported, and 97% of clients like Hinda from Niger say they are satisfied with their experience with MSI.
Too often, young people face barriers to accessing reproductive healthcare. That’s why we reach young clients, like Yune in Zambia, with innovative programs that give adolescents the tools to take control of their lives and futures.
“It would be the end of the world if I didn’t have this service,” Yune said.
With your help, we’ll be here for the long term.

We serve more women and girls every year, because we’re committed to reaching women where and when they need us. Support from generous US donors helps expand our reach even further.
In 2017, we gave up US Government funding because we refused to sign Trump’s Global Gag Rule – but US supporters stepped up to help us keep fighting for women’s reproductive choice. Now more than ever, we depend on our donors and partners, and we couldn’t be more grateful for your support.
“In the face of relentless attacks on women’s rights, we can’t back down from providing reproductive choice to every woman and girl who needs us. With your fearless support, we can reach women and girls in Senegal and around the world. Thank you for standing by us.”
