Rep. Nita Lowey and Sen. Jeanne Shaheen – with almost 200 congressional allies - are taking an important step in improving women’s health and rights globally. In a recent op-ed for NBC, they announced their new bill, the Global Health, Empowerment, and Rights (HER) Act, to permanently repeal the harmful Global Gag Rule, which is threatening women’s access to contraception globally.

“Simply put: Access to reproductive health care allows women to more fully participate in their respective societies and economies, improves both child and maternal mortality and empowers women to make decisions about their futures and those of their children,” Lowey and Shaheen write.

A recent editorial by the Los Angeles Times puts the Global HER Act into perspective by explaining the devastating impacts of President Trump’s Global Gag Rule expansion.

“Even the staunchest abortion opponents should be able to see that crippling these organizations’ efforts to deliver crucial non-abortion healthcare services to underserved and desperately poor communities is cruel and harmful,” the Times Editorial Board states.
