MSI’s Service Delivery Channels

Marie Stopes International began providing services in 1976, from established centers within towns and cities. Since then, we have expanded our delivery model so that we offer our services in many different places and ways.

Each of our channels serves different geographic catchment areas or demographic groups, so that we can make the best use of our resources and funding, and reach as many women as possible.

Six channels. The same high-level of service: Each channel follows the same set of standards for providing services under the MSI brand. This means that however, and wherever, a woman chooses to access our services, she will receive the same high level or care and client-focused service.

We have more than 600 centers located across 37 countries worldwide. These centers set the standard for our services in each program, so we put a lot of thought into their location, design and the way they are run. Above all, we want to be sure that the women who visit our centers feel at ease and as comfortable as possible from the moment they walk through our blue door.

Outreach

Outreach

We will do whatever it takes to deliver reproductive health care to women. Alongside our centers, we have hundreds of outreach teams taking our services out into some of the world’s most hard to reach communities. Our teams will travel using whatever means they need to reach people – from planes in Papua New Guinea, to tuk-tuks in Tanzania, to boats in Bangladesh-- to provide services, usually from public health facilities in rural areas, or to reach out to clients in urban and surrounding areas.

Social Franchising

Social Franchising

We know that we can’t reach all the women who need our services on our own. That’s why in 2004, we established a social franchising network, where we partner with existing private health providers who can deliver high quality contraception services on our behalf. We now have over 3,600 franchisees working with us across 18 countries under our BlueStar social franchise brand. By assessing and ensuring they meet our required standards, and also working with them to provide training and other support, MSI takes full responsibility for the quality of the services they provide.

Marie Stopes Ladies

Marie Stopes Ladies

Marie Stopes Ladies give us another way to provide services within communities and extend our reach further. MS Ladies might be midwives or nurses, or committed women from other walks of life, who we train and incentivize to provide services and follow-up care for us. They cover specific catchment areas for us and visit clients in their homes and at community centers. As with our social franchise network, we assess and ensure the quality of what they do.

Community Health Workers

Community Health Workers

We have built links with health workers who are already based in the communities we work in – people who are already known and trusted in their local areas for providing health information and services. We’ve trained them up to become MSI representatives, so that they can provide information, counseling, services in some cases and referrals to other services.

Social Marketing

Social Marketing

Social marketing brings short term and emergency contraceptive methods closer to the client and provides an opportunity to offer information and referrals to outreach or clinic facilities for clients interested in long-acting or permanent methods. Our social marketing program markets and distributes low cost and free condoms, pills and other contraceptive and health products through pharmacies, community-based distributors and other private providers.

Our new strategy, Scaling-Up Excellence: Universal access, one woman at a time,” builds on the lessons we have learned from 40 years of providing contraception and reproductive health services in some of the world’s most challenging and restrictive environments. It challenges us to refine our models, taking them effectively to scale without ever compromising our commitment to quality or our clients. It challenges us to go further and reach more women with services than ever before.
